Amber Flowers Honored with Daisy Award

May 08, 2024 02:46 PM - Amber Flowers, RN, ICU, was speechless as she entered the second-floor sky lobby where her family and co-workers gathered to celebrate the Daisy Award recipient. The ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 7 and is a great start to the Nurses Week celebration.

“It is such an honor to be recognized,” said Flowers.

Flowers started her career with SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in 2019 as a technician in PCU. During this time, she was working toward her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, which she received in May 2021 from Lincoln University. After graduation, Flowers was hired as a registered nurse on PCU before moving to ICU in 2022.

“I wanted to know how to do more,” said Flowers when asked about moving to ICU. “I got my first code in PCU and the nurse from ICU responded. They really knew what they were doing, and I wanted to learn more.”

Flowers was nominated by the family of a patient who had an extended stay in the ICU. The family was extremely grateful to Flowers and the rest of the ICU staff.

Flowers added, “I had a special bond with the patient.”

They noted the kindness shown to them, which they believe was well beyond the call of duty. Flowers was a key part of this patient’s recovery.

“I was surprised and emotional to see that family again. I even teared up when I saw them,” said Flowers. “Families like that are the reason why I continue to do what I do,” she continued.

Flowers credits her co-workers and manager for helping her get where she is today. The support of her ICU team is something she could not do without.

“I’m thankful to be recognized. I never thought I would be nominated let alone be the recipient of this award. It is truly an honor,” said Flowers.
